Viewing subdomains

You can view all the subdomains hosted on your site along with enabled capabilities - aliases, CGI support, CGI scriptalias.

  • Note: To view subdomains, your site must be set up to host subdomains. Only your service provider can change this setting. If subdomains are enabled for your account, the link "Subdomain" appears on the System Menu.

To view the list of subdomains:

  • In the shortcuts area of the Home page, click Subdomains (Web Server section). The Subdomain window, displaying the list of subdomains.

You will find the following information for each of your subdomains.

  • Name - The name of the subdomain.

  • Owner - The name of the person who owns the domain. By default, you own the subdomain, but ownership can be delegated to a user of the site.

  • CGI - Indicates whether the subdomain is configured to run CGI scripts on the site. If marked for CGI-compliance, a check mark appears against the corresponding subdomain. A cross appears for subdomains that do not have CGI capability.

  • DNS - Indicates whether the name server used for name resolution is the WEBppliance DNS server or a non-WEBppliance DNS server. A check mark appears against the subdomain, if a DNS entry for the subdomain is made in the WEBppliance DNS server. A cross appears for subdomains that do not have an entry in the WEBppliance DNS server.

  • Aliases - An alias allows you to refer to a subdomain by a nickname or an alternative name. This column indicates whether the subdomain inherits aliases from the parent domain. Alias-enabled subdomains are indicated by a check mark, while a cross appears for subdomains that do not inherit alias definitions.

For example, if a parent domain, www.yourdomain.com, with the associated alias, www.yourdomain.net, has a subdomain sales.yourdomain.com, and the subdomain is configured to inherit alias capability from the parent domain, then you can access the subdomain, sales.yourdomain.com, using the inherited alias, sales.yourdomain.net.

  • Important: A subdomain can not have alias definitions if the parent domain on which it is hosted is not configured with alias capability. If you enable aliases for a subdomain whose parent domain does not possess an alias, then attempt to add the subdomain will succeed, however, with warnings.

  • Actions - Allows you to view subdomain details, change subdomain settings, and delete subdomains.
