What is an email redirect and how does it work?
Email redirects are very HANDY! First off lets assume that a user name has been taken already on the server your placed on. You obviously cannot assume that user name to have a pop box created... therefore create an alias name! Alias email addresses are basically an email address in which has NO pop box to retrieve the mail. All alias email addresses are redirected to a POP box that is specified in a redirect.txt file
This is crucial to the setup...
Use arachnophilia editor or notepad
and place the name of the alias for this example lets use sue, barney, and dale
anyone writing sue or barney and dale will be rediercted to their isp's email account or other pop boxes that is specified.
The name goes on the left flush to the left margin and the pop box that it needs to be redirected to goes on the right of the name. The spacing in between the alias on the left and the address on the right MUST be made by pressing your tab key twice or it will NOT work.
leave the cursor blinking at the end of the email address when you save it
Even if you have 40 names in there they do NOT have to line up, they HAVE to be spaced by two tabs only.
sue suesaddress
barney Thepurp
dale yourdomain
default username
Notice above there is a default as an alias! This is a catch all! If there is a mistype by someone sending you mail the default will catch it and place it in your main pop box that was setup with us.
Upload the redirect.txt to your HOME folder on your server. It now has to be renamed to remove the .txt extension and a dot placed in front of it which will make it invisible.
redirect.txt becomes .redirect
To overwrite it or update it on your server at a later time, you may create another redirect.txt and ftp it to the home folder and rename it again. This will overwrite the previous one.
